Midland Bank PLC is celebrating its anniversary today, June 20. The country’s leading bank’s 12-year journey, achievements and challenges were discussed with Prothom Alo by its Managing Director and CEO Md. Ahsan-uz-Zaman. Interviewed by Tarek Mahmud Nizami

Midland Bank PLC has completed an era. What do you consider to be your biggest achievement in this long period?

Ahsan-uz-Zaman: A decade is a time of pride, joy and gratitude for us. Customer trust is Midland Bank’s biggest achievement in an era. We have stood by our customers through modern, technology-based and inclusive banking services. This trust has been built mainly through well-planned management, following the instructions of the central bank and providing timely services.

Prothom Alo:

What were the challenges in the 12-year journey and how did you overcome them? What kind of cooperation do you expect from policymakers to overcome these challenges?

Ahsan-uz-Zaman: As a new bank, one of our initial challenges was to gain the trust of customers and investors. Along with establishing our position in the market. However, we were able to do that by ensuring good governance, professionalism and timely service. Apart from this, in 2020, financial transactions during the Corona period had to face various challenges including global and domestic economic instability, inflation, foreign exchange shortage, post-Corona recovery period. We have always tried to face them with firmness, honesty and prudence.

In addition, the cooperation of our policymakers in facing these challenges was highly commendable. Their timely policies, guidelines and tolerant attitude have given us courage. In the future, we would like the policymakers to continue such cooperation in the modernization of the banking sector, customer security and financial inclusion.
